Toronto is going to become even more multicultural in the next two decades.
According to a new Statistics Canada report, Projections of the Diversity of the Canadian Population, the visible minority population of Toronto could more than double from 2.3 million in 2006 to 5.6 million by 2031.
It could account for nearly 63% of Toronto’s total population, up from 43% in 2006 and as a whole, and would also represent 43% of Canada’s entire population of visible minority people.
The South Asian community in Toronto would remain the largest visible minority group, with its population potentially tripling from 718,000 to 2.1 million – representing 24% of Toronto’s population by 2031.
Two contributing factors would be a high volume of South Asian immigrants and a fertility rate that is higher than many other visible minority groups, said the report.
The Chinese, Arabs and West Asians are named as other large ethnic groups in Toronto, the report cites.
